Six Flags Discovery Kingdom Update – February 6th 2016

image5Six Flags Discovery Kingdom is a park ever changing this year. Even while ignoring The Joker (since we published that update yesterday), we’ve seen rides open from and close for maintenance, the construction of new restaurants, and a brand new attraction make its soft debut. With all that in mind, can we really call Discovery Kingdom less than ever changing?

Recently our images have popped up on other sites and forums, awesome that our coverage spreads, not so awesome that no one mentioned where they got the images from. We are totally fine with our audience using our images, BUT ONLY IF credit is given to californiacoasterkings.com. Thank you!

The Dolphin statue has returned to its usual place in the fountain, although there is still no water due to the drought.DSC_0106 (Large)

Just around the corner, Monsoon Falls remains closed, although entirely stripped of any Fright Fest theming. Hopefully it will reopen soon. OMG THAT’S THE JOKER IN THE BACK. DSC_0105 (Large)

Speaking of water rides, White Water Safari has been closed down as well, as it usually is this time of year. Voodoo on the other hand has finally reopened.DSC_0083 (Large)

Tsunami Soakers was even closed, yes you heard that right, for maintenance that is. All three water rides in the park down, oh well.DSC_0102 (Large)

In that same area Superman: Ultimate Flight has been closed as well for its annual maintenance. In fact the whole area to enter the queue has been closed off, probably to give RMC a little bit more room to work with on The Joker.image4

The food court has quite some work going on. One of the old Primo’s building is being transformed into a JB’s Barbecue Sports Bar, which will feature a park-first: indoor dining!image2DSC_0085 (Large)

In addition, Panda Express is undergoing a change into the Six Flags brand joint, Chop Six, the sign has already been placed it should open relatively shortly.image3

Speaking of general investments and additions, the entire path from Monsoon Falls down to Sea Lion Stadium has had its fences replaced to be lined with benches, providing more seating opportunities! Please Six Flags Magic Mountain, observe… DSC_0104 (Large)

Over in Oasis Plaza, Kong remains at one train, and never had more than a station wait all day.image6

Medusa is running its normal two trains and looking as photogenic as ever. Every row but the first was a walk on. Just like Magic Mountain, it was a wonderful day to be at the park yesterday!image5

The M&M’s have been removed from the stairs heading up to the back of the park, which isn’t such a bad thing. It was getting very faded.DSC_0078 (Large)

Also in that area, The Joker sign has been added to the list of attractions, which should also start popping up elsewhere around the park. (The Joker Update can be found here).DSC_0114 (Large)

And of course, going up those stairs and back towards Boomerang, Pacific Rim 5-D has made its soft debut in the 4-D theater.image1

This is of course a soft opening so there is this sign outside the ride describing its unfinished nature.DSC_0075 (Large)

Because of this, the theming around the ride is somewhat minimal. There are a few games, vending machines,  and of course a leftover car from Fright Fest, but this may be added to in the weeks to come.DSC_0080 (Large)IMG_0389 image7

The look of the building itself we think is awesome. Although it may not fit, something about the vertical pieces of wood is just beautiful.IMG_0391

The pre-show is very very well done, using actors scenes, and special effects from the movie itself to give it a very authentic and epic feel.IMG_0400

This authenticity carries over into the show itself, with again, actors and special effects taken from Guillermo Del Toro’s special effects masterpiece. Although it starts out with a lot of camera and seat movement, it really settles into its own as the fight progresses, with some well used water effects, perfectly integrated seat movement, and some stunning stunning shots, that are only accentuated by everything else that is going on. Overall, this is an excellent addition to the park, and we will have a full Ride Review coming up in the near future.DSC_0079 (Large)IMG_0401

That’s all for today, thanks so much for reading as always. Have you ridden or seen Pacific Rim? What do you think? Comment below and let us know!
