SeaWorld San Diego – The Ground Breaking of Ocean Explorer

Ocean Explorer color (Large)SeaWorld breaks ground on an exciting new attraction that will inspire guests to explore the depths of the oceans and take action to protect the amazing creatures who inhabit them. Ocean Explorer, which is scheduled to open in late spring of 2017 at SeaWorld San Diego, will feature multiple aquariums, exciting rides and digital technologies to engage park guests in an experience centered on exploration and adventure. SeaWorld has invited special guests to share in the important milestone: San Diego City Councilmember Lorie Zapf, San Diego Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Jerry Sanders and San Diego Tourism Authority President and CEO Joe Terzi were joined by SeaWorld’s President Marilyn Hannes and more than a dozen 7th and 8th graders from Knox Middle School.

At Ocean Explorer guests will have the opportunity learn about some of the ocean’s most fascinating creatures, coupled with a mix of rides and activities:

Mini submarines, the signature ride of the attraction, will turn visitors into researchers on a mission to collect data and learn how they can help animals during a three-minute experience including an onboard digital navigation dashboard.Station Interior view (Large)

The heart and destination of Ocean Explorer will be a series of undersea research bases, or pods, housing specially-designed aquariums and interactive activities displaying unique as well as elusive ocean animals. Visitors will come eye-to-eye with:

  • Giant Pacific octopuses
  • Japanese spider crabs (largest arthropod in the world)
  • Moray eelsEel - Interior view (Large)

Enriching educational displays, technologies and graphics will be key components of each pod.Crab - Interior view (Large)

In addition to the mini subs, Ocean Explorer will also feature:

  • Exhilarating wave swinger ride with chairs suspended from the tentacles of a giant jelly
  • Octopus swing ride
  • Jump-around submarine ride
  • Bounce/drop ride
